Wesburn Weekly October 29, 2008

Recently the school received an email from the Upper Yarra RSL letting us know that they have some money to give to the school.  This is as a result of a programme they are currently running with participating primary schools where, every time people connected with our school dine at the RSL and mention the school name when ordering their meals, the school receives 3% of the total value of the meals. I was there a couple of weeks ago and simply mentioned Wesburn P.S.  It’s that easy.  Please try to remember to do this if you dine out at this venue.

Staff have noticed this term that a small number of students are wearing shoes with rollers in them at school.  These have the potential to cause a few accidents and injuries so no children are to wear them to school from now on.  Thanks for your support on this.

Allison Barrie (Angela’s mum) came up last weekend and weeded our rose garden at the front of the school.  Thanks Allison, it looks fantastic!  She would love to hear from anyone who might be able to spare some time to help out with mowing and weeding at the school.  If you think you can please ring the school or send a note so that we can pass the information onto Allison.

At last Monday’s assembly we officially opened the Investing in Our Schools projects (the outdoor learning area, sports field over the basketball court, and shade sails over all the playground equipment).  A letter from the Hon. Julia Gillard MP was read to parents, students and staff and a plaque recognising the contribution of the Australian Government was presented and will be displayed outside the 2/3 and 3/4 rooms.

I would like to thank the small group of Parents & Friends members who have worked really hard this year to provide services and raise funds for the school.  At last Friday’s meeting they agreed to give $3000 to the school to assist in purchasing a new electronic whiteboard for grade 3/4 early next year.   Thanks so much to all of you for the hard work and commitment to our school.

Recently I was handed a very interesting document entitled ‘Parent-Teacher Partnerships’.  They point out the importance of parents preparing the child/ren for school and suggest key points that can help.

  • Teach your child respect, acceptable behaviour, good manners, personal hygiene, punctuality, and healthy choices
  • Teach your child about the importance of values and morals
  • Encourage positive attitudes
  • Allow your child to make mistakes and accept responsibility for their own actions.

Next week I will highlight aspects of shared responsibility for children’s education.

With the Open Evening a couple of weeks ago and visits to the school from past students we have received some very positive feedback about the school that I would like to share with you this week.

John Mathieson attended Wesburn in the early 1960’s and recently found our website.  He sent an email and wrote ‘…fantastic to see what an active and well organised website you have and what a positive approach the school has to developing students as good citizens who contribute to their community.’

And, to finish, thanks to Caleb’s mum, Alison, who commented in the Open Evening feedback book, ‘Wesburn Primary School Rocks!’

Until next week …

Anne
