Students in grade 3/4 test the PH level of the soil

Students in grade 3/4 test the PH level of the soil

The grade 3/4 students at Wesburn are testing the soil for it’s PH level. The PH measures the level of acidity or alkalinity in the soil, which directly impacts on the plants ability to access nutrients. Vegetables generally thrive in a neutral soil with PH levels of between 6 and 7.5.

The children enjoyed squirting the dye from the test pack onto the soil, sprinkling the white powder and watching the soil change color before their eyes. The soil in the school garden is around 7.5 which helps explain why we are able to grow such healthy and delicious vegetables for the kitchen program.

After testing the soil the students recorded the results in the garden diaries and reported back to the class. This is just one of the many fun and educational activities which students in grades 3 to 6 participate in each week during garden class.
