We started this program in 2007 with funding provided by the state government under the “Go for Your Life” banner.  However, the initial funding amount has now run out, and it is up to our school to make the program sustainable into the future.

Our Principal and all of our staff realise how important the kitchen garden program is for our children so it is now funded directly from school funds.

We have seen over the past two years how this program is changing the eating habits of a lot of our children. We watch kids getting involved in and excited about gardening and cooking, knowing in our hearts that this is such a positive step forward for the future health and wellbeing of these children.

The world is changing, and one day we may not have the same structures in place that we have grown up with and have come to rely on for so many things in life. For example, the supply of food from all over Australia and right across the world to supermarkets and supply chains is not guaranteed in a future where the worlds resources are fast running out.

Peak oil and climate change are very real issues, and we would be naïve to assume that life as we know it will go on forever or even until our children reach adulthood.

The kitchen garden program we have running at Wesburn Primary School right now is one of the very real, grass roots ways we can tackle these bigger issues in order to impact positively on our children and their future livelihoods. If they can competently grow their own food and be confident about how to cook it, they have a big head start by having a ready supply of fresh food grown locally and a better chance at pursuing a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Twinkle Twinkle!

Auslan is a language recognised by the Australian Government.  It is the national sign language  of Australia.

Wesburn Primary School is proud to incorporate this language into their curriculum as their LOTE.

This year children will be learning nursery rhymes in Auslan.  The picture on our right comes from Sign Planet at http://bilby.net/ Hopefully we have lots of fun learning these as it will be new to everyone!!!!!!  If we get confident enough we may even be able to perform them at assembly.

The Magic of Reading

From a child’s first steps to their first words, parents play a vital role in encouraging and guiding their child’s development.

Don’t forget, you are your child’s first teacher.

Parents also have an important role to play in helping their child to read.

The ability to read is so critical to a child’s success at school and in life.

“Parents have a powerful impact on their child’s enjoyment and love of reading and their ability to read,”

“Children learn about the value and importance of reading by watching their parents read books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, signs and other environmental print in their homes and communities. “

Helping your child get ready to read-

Even before a child starts school, parents can do a number of things at home to help their child get ready for reading:

• Speak and sing to your child – this introduces them to the sounds of language
• Read aloud wherever you go – even labels on supermarket shelves or signs you see while driving
• Explain what you’re doing when making shopping lists, viewing a website, or writing cards
• Introduce books to your child as early as possible
• Familiarise them with how a book looks and feels
• When you read to your child, use different voices and read at different speeds to give the story excitement
• When you view a website, point to the words so the word you speak is the one your child is seeing.

Supporting your child as they learn to read at school - 

As children learn to read at school, parents can help reinforce the skills they are learning in the classroom.

It’s important to remember that children will learn to read at different rates.

Parents should discuss their child’s progress with their teacher to work out the best way they can help their child at home.

Here is some advice to parents of school-age children:

· Your child will bring home a new take-home book in their reader cover most nights.

· Begin by looking through the book the child has brought home together. Talk about the pictures and discuss what may happen in the story.

· Take it slowly. If your child gets stuck on a word when reading aloud, encourage your child to read on to get the overall meaning

• If your child makes a mistake, don’t interrupt – allow time for your child to correct themselves
• After reading, talk about the story and the illustrations and ask questions
• Fill in details about how your child read and sign their Reading Diary.
• It is important that your child reads every night if possible. Children who read regularly become better readers, and better learners.
• Read books that have been made into films or videos and talk about the differences between the two
• Join a local library and borrow books for your child
• Give books as presents. If your children are reluctant to read, offer them something they are truly interested in, even information books or comics.

The single-most important thing a parent can do to help their child with their reading is to “grab a book and read to them every day”.

Don’t worry if you are reading much-loved stories again and again. Your child may even learn some off by heart. This is all part of the journey into becoming a keen reader,

If your child is just beginning to read, praise is a magic ingredient.

Always praise them for their enthusiasm and skill and enjoy reading with them!

Parents are welcome to be involved in the Reading Program at Wesburn Primary. Teachers love to have parents in to hear reading, be part of literacy groups, helping with writing, reading stories. Please talk to your child’s teacher.
